Equality and Diversity : Multiple experiences
This conversation should help people develop an
understanding of multiple labels. In simple, terms people will be invited to
think about the advantages and disadvantages they have experienced by being
part of different groups.
Whether imposed by others through labels, or
self-represented through chosen badges, the different groups we belong to make
up our identity. Our identity is ever changing. The labels we chose to share
may depend on context, time, place and people. The labels we may acquire are
often imposed or determined by custom or circumstance. [see Blogging
and Badges ]
Groups in a similar fashion have an identity, in that they
have shared characteristics, however the prejudice these evoke may be either
advantageous or dangerous when
transposed to assumptions or expectations. Therefore, viewing labels and badges
as positive or negative is overly simplistic. However, as we all know, some
afford privilege in some circumstances and disadvantage in others. It is this articulation of oppression on
different levels that can help professionals acknowledge their power, and act
in ways that aim to empower others.
Applied to a working context, this should help people focus
on what makes a respectful culture. The conversation will help untangle the
difference between labels and badges. It will help people think more clearly
about how to deliver an outward focus in the development of inclusive practice.
This should help people describe user led participation, and help promote the
involvement of individuals from marginalised groups and their decision-making power.
